On Sunday January 18, 2015 Harmony Eldercare had a lively interaction with the senior citizens of Pallikaranai. Mr Sarma the President organised the event as part of the monthly meeting of the organization.
65 year old Mr N Srinivasan, a Mechanical Engineer and MBA from Bajaj Institute gave an overall introductory brief on what it means to be a senior citizen and the challenges it brings with it. He emphasized that with responsibilities of work and successful grooming of children now over, it was time for senior citizens to start enjoying their life. Most important suggestion he gave to fellow Senior citizens was to take charge of their lives and have the ability to say No whenever the situation demanded.
Srinivasan said “Very often seniors get involved with baby sitting and menial household work. And it is a fun initially then as age catches up it becomes harder and harder. More so when they have to travel, some times across the globe to reach the their children.” This is one example of saying No when one has to”
Then Dr.Srivatsan founder and Chief Executive Officer of Anuseva, advised the members on health. Of some of the diseases that could affect the life and style of the seniors diabetes, high blood pressure arthritis, cataract form part of it.
He spoke about stress and why it happens. He said”when a condition is not suitable or acceptable to us, stress happens.” It is fear of the future and worry of the past he said. Major life events and lifestyle choices also cause stress. Stress leads to anxiety, anger, depression, anger or sadness.” And he advised the members how to get over it.
Raj Shankar, Directory of Harmony Eldercare also gave a presentation on what seniors needed. It included suggestions on medical care at home, wellness solutions and senior friendly living spaces such as retirement communities.
